Photos above show an example of landmarks for a BK casting. The landmarks are drawn on a casting sock with stretch wrap underneath. Markings are indelible pencil for transfer to a plaster cast.
If using rigid Scotchcast or similar fiberglass wrap, use stretch wrap only, and mark directly with a Sharpie. The Sharpie markings will transfer to the fiberglass wrap better than an indelible.
Cast over the limb with minimal compression for best results. Specific or excess compression over M/L, A/P, or patella tendon is not required.
Plaster casting is the preferred method as demonstrated in the video. Shown is Gypsona Xtra-fast in rigid (green) and elastic (red). Typically will use 4″ for the cast wrap and either 6″ or 8″ for an anterior splint when using method shown in the video.
Rigid Scotchcast or other fiberglass wrap can be utilized. Extra attention is required while the material is setting up to maintain good contact with the limb. This material has some memory and spring-back until it sets up.
If using Soft Cast, please package the cast with minimal compression in the shipping box. A cast using this material can distort during shipping if compressed with the box or packaging material. Excess heat encountered at times during shipping can also lead to distortion.
